5 Reasons Moms Are Switching Their Kids to This Energy Bar
Ten ingredients you can pronounce, sweetened by dates and honey, made by a dad. The wrapper's printed below so you don't have to take our word for it.
1Reason one
You can read the whole label at a red light
Ten ingredients on the Original, every one of them something you know and can pronounce, every one certified organic. No oils, no preservatives, no fillers, no “natural flavors.” That's the whole label on the left, as printed. The empty space is the point.

2Reason two
It's sweet because dates and honey are sweet
The label says 14g total sugars and 2g added. The 2g is the honey, which the FDA counts as added, and we're fine with that. Everything else is fruit. There's no brown rice syrup, tapioca syrup, cane syrup, or malt extract anywhere on the list, which is more than most bars in the school drop-off line can say.
What's doing the sweetening · the bar at the grocery store
17g sugar
- Brown rice syrup
- Tapioca syrup
- Cane syrup
- Barley malt extract
Seventeen ingredients total. Full label, syrups highlighted, in this article.

14g sugar · 2g added
- Dates
- Honey
That's the list. Chocolate Sea Salt reads 3g added, because dark chocolate is made with a little cane sugar.

3Reason three
Steady from pickup to practice
Every bar is built on a 4:1 carb-to-protein ratio from whole food, the same rough ratio endurance athletes and mountain guides have run on for decades. Mostly carbs for the energy, enough protein and fiber to slow it down. A kid at soccer and a guide on a glacier want the same thing from a snack: to still be a functioning person two hours later.

4Reason four
Everybody in the house actually eats it
Texture is where “healthy” bars lose kids: too dry, too dense, or chalky with protein powder. Ours are soft and chewy, yet still crunchy, which is just an honest description of oats and nuts held together with dates. Five flavors, four of them kid-ready. Coffee Pecan has real coffee beans, so that one's yours.
Every flavor contains tree nuts or peanuts. Coffee Pecan has coffee beans.

5Reason five
Still made by the dad who started it
Most “little” bar brands got bought by a cereal company, and the ingredient list quietly grew a syrup while the founder's story stayed on the box. Bar U Eat is still Sam and Jason, two childhood friends from Steamboat Springs, makin' every batch in small runs in Hayden, Colorado. Nobody's bought us. Nobody's adding a syrup. Even the wrapper is industrial compostable.

What the label-readers say
★★★★★Nicole Ben-Hamo VerifiedI absolutely LOVE BAR-U-EAT bars. My kids do too! I have purchased the oatmeal raisin, original, and cherry peanut and love them. They keep me full and taste great! Best is that I know I am eating something clean that also tastes great. Sustainable wrappers is an amazing perk too! Kudos to Hotel Jackson in Montana for providing them for their guests!

Questions we get at the market table
Are these okay for a nut-free school?
No. Every flavor contains tree nuts or peanuts. Families with nut-free schools tell us they keep the box in the car for pickup, practice, and weekends instead.
Is there caffeine in any of them?
Only Coffee Pecan, which has real coffee beans in it. Original, Oatmeal Raisin, Peanuts N' Cherries, and Chocolate Sea Salt have none. The Try 'Em All Box includes Coffee Pecan, so set those three aside for yourself.
How much sugar is in a bar, really?
14 to 16g total per bar, from dates, honey, and fruit. Added sugars read 2g (the honey) on every flavor except Chocolate Sea Salt, which reads 3g because dark chocolate is made with a little cane sugar. There are no syrups or sweeteners added to the recipe.
Are they vegan?
No. Every flavor has honey in it. They are certified organic, non-GMO, gluten-free, dairy-free, and soy-free, with no oils, preservatives, or fillers.
How big is a bar, and how many should a kid eat?
Each bar is 52g and 220 to 250 calories, which is a real snack for a hungry ten-year-old. For younger kids, most parents split one. You know your kid; we just make the bar.
What if we don't like them?
The Try 'Em All Box is built for exactly that: three each of four flavors, so everybody in the house finds the one they fight over. Questions or problems, reach out through barueat.com and a real person in Steamboat will answer.
