Dates are a super old fruit. Fossil records show that the date palm was thriving up to 50 million years ago and the fruit was cultivated and eaten as far back as 5,000-6,000 B.C.E. by ancient Middle Eastern cultures. These cultures considered the date palm “the tree of life”- a fitting name as the dates were the perfect source of nutrition for these ancient nomadic peoples because they're high in potassium and carbohydrates and were portable enough throw into their ancient stuff sacks as an on-the-go snack.
The Medjool date, in particular, is considered the diamond of all dates due to their delectable sweetness, chewy texture, and large size. In fact, another nickname for them is the “king of dates” because at one time they were reserved for Moroccan royalty.
You can always pick out a Medjool date from the hundreds of other varieties because of their size and deep amber-brown crinkly skin that shimmers like champagne powder. If you’re lucky enough to sink your chompers into one of these delicious treats, you’ll find hints of caramel, honey, and cinnamon. They’re so creamy and high in moisture content that they almost taste as if they had been warmed up in your grandma’s oven.
Given that ancient nomadic peoples used dates as fuel to do ancient nomadic things and the fact that they just straight up taste amazing, we here BAR-U-EAT felt that they would be the perfect base for a bar that you can throw into your pack to keep you going - wherever your adventures may take you.
